"Grand
Plow"

During my senior year of high school, my dad and I purchased a MIG welder,
and also attended a night school class where taught by the Iron Workers
union. During the class, I was able to become a AWS D1.5 Bridge Code
certified welder.
With the welder, my friends and I were to create a wide
variety of projects. The most recent (and the only one that I have pictures
of unfortunately) is the 'grand plow'. The car belonged to my
brother. My dad was going to scrap it b because it needed ~$600 for
inspection, but my friend and I had other plans. We first
started off by obtaining some tube steel and sheet metal (GE salvage
$0.10/LB). Then began welding.

We first removed the bumper and welded on some bracing.

To keep the bumper from collapsing, we ran some additional to steel to the
'frame' below the passenger compartment

The plow would be on a hinge so that it could be raised and lowered.

Me completing another 'perfect' weld.

The angle of the plow is manually adjustable, and a winch (only $30 from
harborfrieght) is used to raise the plow.

We used some pretty thick sheet metal for the face of the plow, which turned
out to be a pain to shape. We ended up having to use the weight of the car
to force the sheet metal into shape. we jacked up the car and then lowering
it onto the sheet metal and supports, welded it where we could and then
repositioned it.
Its been working great for a couple years now. |
